A Disciplined Approach to Technical Textiles

At Salty Buoy Marine Canvas, we transform complex operational requirements into rugged, predictable textile solutions. Driven by a career in mechanical product design and systems engineering principles, our fabrication process is grounded in technical discipline. We understand that defense assets require protective solutions that mitigate environmental degradation, endure extreme climate shifts, and maintain total operational readiness.

Our strength lies in our ability to rigorously review technical data sheets, interpret military specifications, and evaluate standards to ensure the correct textile is selected for the mission profile. Design risk is managed from the outset, ensuring our custom tops, enclosures and covers precisely satisfy the stated operational requirements.

As a Canadian-owned and self-managed fabrication facility on the Pacific coast, Salty Buoy offers the domestic agility, clear documentation, and precision required by Tier 1 defense primes seeking to fulfill regional Industrial and Technological Benefits (ITB) obligations with a reliable, collaborative partner.

Technical Capabilities & Process

We eliminate the variability of traditional, manual textile patterning by introducing a digital-first, systems-driven workflow. This methodology ensures dimensional accuracy, absolute repeatability, and integration with existing physical hardware platforms.

Engineering-Led Design

We apply design principles to consider stress distribution, fastening methods, and spatial optimization. By modeling fabric assemblies within a digital space, we ensure structural integrity and predictable fit before a single piece of material is cut.

Specification & Compliance Review

We interpret technical data sheets and environmental standards to ensure selected textiles, clear rigid media, and fastening components precisely match your stated mission profiles. Our focus is on long-term performance and risk mitigation.

Digital Patterning & CNC Accuracy

Utilizing advanced digital data and automated CNC plotting technology, we translate verified 3D models into physical components with total geometric consistency. This eliminates manual fit errors and supports efficient serial production.

Projects & Technical Integration

Note to Procurement Officers & Prime Contractors: To respect operational security and data protection protocols, the following commercial projects demonstrate our capacity for systematic material evaluation, digital workflow integration, and disciplined risk management.

Large-Scale Marine Enclosure Integration

Operational Relevance: This project demonstrated our systematic approach to managing technical risk, executing internal R&D, and operating within complex project structures. Tasked with an advanced fabric-to-acrylic bonding technique outside standard industry training, we conducted structured research, material testing, and prototype evaluation to validate a reliable bonding method that met strict luxury aesthetic and long-term durability standards.

Critical to the project's success was our close, cooperative integration with the vessel's refit captain and crew. We maintained clear communication channels, respected active shipyard safety and scheduling protocols, and provided digital spatial tracking to precisely digitize structural windscreen openings, enabling the seamless integration of new rigid glass panels.

Digital Templating & Serial Repeatability

Project Profile: Implementation of a 100% digital fabrication workflow—utilizing 3D spatial data capturing and automated CNC plotting—for a complex marine enclosure system.

Operational Relevance: This project serves as our modern proof of concept for digital precision. By replacing traditional manual patterning with 3D digital data capture, we mapped complex, multi-angled physical geometries into a virtual design space. This allowed us to verify fitment tolerances and optimize material nested layouts before physical production, ensuring absolute geometric accuracy and demonstrating a highly repeatable workflow suitable for serial production runs.
